Before you start cleaning for Thanksgiving, walk through the house as if you were a guest. Where will you leave your coat, set down a dish, wash your hands and pull up a chair? Those four stops make a better cleaning list than trying to tackle every closet before dinner.

A week before: decide which rooms count

Make space for coats near the entrance. Check the guest bathroom and give the sink, mirror, toilet and floor your attention. If anyone is staying overnight, set aside towels and bedding now so laundry does not compete with cooking later. Leave rooms that guests will not use off the list.

Two days before: clear the kitchen and dining area

Decide where hot dishes and serving plates will go. Clear that counter, wipe cabinet handles and clean the stovetop when it is cool. Pull out the dining chairs and vacuum beneath them before you set the table. If the kitchen doubles as a gathering space, leave one surface free for whatever guests bring.

The night before: finish the jobs that will stay done

Set out hand towels, soap and spare toilet tissue. Empty the guest bathroom bin. Put a liner and spare bag in the kitchen bin. Save the last kitchen counter wipe for after food prep; doing it twice does not make the holiday easier.

Thanksgiving morning: keep the list short

Check the entry floor, wipe the bathroom sink and clear the kitchen landing spot. Then put away the cleaning supplies and enjoy your company.
